Modified Data - the GRP Layers LGATE-074, LGATE-075

As part of a review of Landgate's GPR layers, due to the name changes of GPR Layers, the following changes have been made to the GPR Land Assets (LGATE-074) and GPR Improvements Assets (LGATE-075).

The changes include:

  • Short term fix is to match the old name to the new name and then updated the map file.
  • Longer term fix is to have the GPR codes added to the view as these are not altered in the case of a names change.

If you have any queries regarding these changes, please contact Landgate on (08) 9273 7211.

If you require assistance with accessing these data please contact the SLIP Enabler Support Team on (08) 9273 7832.

Invalid Polygon Types

Please note that self-intersecting polygons and other non OGC compliant polygons are not suitable for loading into SLIP.

Examples of invalid polygons:

Note:
The “banana polygon” (or “inverted shell”) is a case where the OGC topology model for valid geometry and the model used internally by ESRI differ. The ESRI model considers rings that touch to be invalid, and prefers the banana form for this kind of shape. The OGC model is the reverse.

When loading data please ensure polygons are OGC compliant, otherwise, they cause errors when layers are drawn.

These errors will slow down SLIP WMS services and stop WFS services from working.

This is a known issue that has been impacting SLIP services, Applications and Customers.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the SLIP Enabler Support team by phone: (08) 9273 7832.

Points of Interest (POI) DATA SURVEY

In early 2013, Landgate will be making a Points of Interest (POI) dataset available to customers through our Geospatial Data and SLIP delivery channels. Coverage of the data will span the Perth Metropolitan area (incl. Mandurah) with major regional centres to be included over time.

As a recent purchaser of Landgate’s topographic data, or as a SLIP Data Services subscriber, you are invited to participate in a short survey that will enable us to learn more about our customers' POI data requirements. Your input is highly valued and will assist Landgate in effectively quantifying customer requirements for the provision of the new POI dataset.

The information you provide will be treated in the strictest confidence and is protected by the Federal Privacy Legislation. Your individual responses will not be reported or attributed to you without your permission.

Completion of the questions should take no more than 10 minutes of your time.

The survey will be closing at 5pm on Friday 16th of November 2012. Please respond before this date.

Please follow this link to access the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DN7ZTM6

July 2012

WALIS MINI FORUM – 26 July 2012

WALIS and Landgate successfully hosted a SLIP mini forum. This event was an opportunity to reconnect with SLIP users and SLIP service providers. The Agenda aimed to reinvigorate the use and benefit of the SLIP services through discussion, education and sharing SLIP knowledge and Agency case studies.

The Landgate SLIP team presented the SLIP basics, how the system works, processes for SLIP data management and examples of applications. The SLIP technical team were also available for questions and discussion. Selected agencies showcased how they are utilising the SLIP infrastructure and using available SLIP datasets.

The shared Land information Platform (SLIP) mini forum was held on 26 July at the Landgate Perth Cloisters. The room was packed to capacity, the audience participated gleefully with direct and honest opinions, observations and pressing issues. It was clear that Base Maps was the hot topic followed closely with geo caching, date time stamp of data and off course ease and speed of access.

The activity in the room not only centred on the person presenting up front but also the twitter feeds on #SLIPForum and diligent note taking on the whiteboard at the back by the SLIP teams. After Darren Mottolini set the SLIP scene, Kylie Middleton followed with the 101 back to basics for SLIP. Mark Taylor and Craig Carpenter showcased the collaborative effort of FESA and DEC which concluded just before morning tea. The not so rapid show and tell sessions revealed what is happening from a user’s perspective. Jame Spath’s photo communication spoke volumes to get the point across how SLIP is keeping the City of Busselton’s core data as fresh as a daisy. Shane French gave an update on QGIS supporting the DEC pollution response team; Mark Murphy explained the meaning of HAGIS (Housing Assets Geospatial Information Session) and Kevin Lee was proud to announce Interest Enquiry availability since 24 July.

Developers stories included Chris Scott’s photographic depiction of Digital Mapping Solutions whilst Daniel Tan was brave to give a lively demonstration on Amristar iConnect capabilities.

This left us with a little bit of time for final questions and discussion before reminding everyone to sign in on the SLIP Google discussion group (https://groups.google.com) and to please provide that all important feedback.

Data Downloader - Missing Columns

The Data Downloader service provides files in three formats, SHP, TAB and GML. An error has been identified within the TAB and GML files if an attribute column has a 'DATE' column. These date columns are being ignored when the files are created as part of the data download process, resulting in the columns not appearing in the TAB or GML files.

SHP file is recommended as a workaround.

More information on Data Download available here.

Unexploded Ordnance - New Interest for Interest Enquiry

Former Military Training Area (Unexploded Ordnance) interest information is now available through Interest Enquiry enabling subscribers to determine online if a particular piece of land has been used for military purposes.

A Former Military Training Area is an area that may have been used by the Department of Defence, Allied or Foreign Armed Services in a manner where a hazard such as explosive ordnance may exist.

In Western Australia management of former military training areas is undertaken by the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia (FESA) Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Services, the only body authorised to sign clearance documents. Unexploded ordnance is subject to the Commonwealth Policy on the Management of Land Affected by Unexploded Ordnance.

The availability of Unexploded Ordnance information through Interest Enquiry is the result of a joint effort between Landgate and FESA.

This latest addition to the number of interests now available online, along with Certificate of Title and Survey information, will help property professionals to more easily provide full disclosure of property interests.

Landgate is continuing to source and add to the number of interests available online.

Geothermal Titles now available through Landgate's Interest Enquiry

Landgate's Interest Enquiry team has been working with the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) to make a new report available through Interest Enquiry concerning Geothermal Titles.

The DMP report enables you to determine if a particular piece of land has been issued with a Geothermal Title for the purpose of supporting geothermal energy development. Geothermal energy sources energy fromheated groundwater and hot dry rocks and is cosidered to be a renewable and clean energy source. It is already being harnessed in many places throughout the World. In Western Australia, the managemaent of geothermal exploration via the issue of Geothermal Titles is primarily the responsibility of the Minister for Mines and Petroleum through DMP and is subject to the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources Act 1967.

Along with the Certificate of Title and Survey information, this latest addition will assist the property industry in accessing an ever increasing range of property interests online which complements information available on the Certificate of Title that does not represent full disclosure of interests.

Interest Enquiry is available 24/7 through Landgate's My Landgate website.

Find out what is currently available through Interest Enquiry.

GeoServer Memory Upgrade

As a part of Landgate's Stabilisation Program to ensure consistency and availability of our online systems and services, a number of memory issues were identified with Landgate's GeoServer application. GeoServer is an application responsible for the delivery of core functions within SLIP. A patch was subsequently applied to improve the performance and efficiency in the way GeoServer processes WFS queries.

The GeoServer's performance has increased significantly since the patch was applied on 25 August 2010. In addition, the processing memory allocation on the GeoServer was standardised and increased, resulting in consistent allocation of memory across all GeoServer machines and processes. This additional allocation of processing memory has also seen increased performance and stability of the GeoServer Application and hardware.

SLIP Portal Replacement

Please note that the SLIP Portal has been migrated to new servers. The look and feel of the current Portal will be maintained, as will the functionality.

The migration has been very successful, with few users noticing and difference between the portals; however users with Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) will notice the left-hand menu and the WA Atlas and Interragator+ icons are missing from the page. To resolve this issue, users are required to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 (IE7).

To find out what version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer, you will need to;

  1. Open your Internet Explorer
  2. Click on the Help menu located on the tool bar at the top of the browser.

There will be an option 'About Internet Explorer', when clicked this will show which version is installed.

To upgrade from IE6 to IE7, users can contact their IT department or following the how to instructions available in wikihow. Please note Landgate does not provide support for any of these browsers.

If users experience any problems in viewing information or accessing data, please contact the SLIP Enabler Support team on (08) 9273 7832 or email SLIPEnabler@landgate.wa.gov.au.

18th February 2009 - Business Intelligence: Making Spatial Information Work For You

Western Australian Land Information System (WALIS), in conjunction with the Australian Computer Society, will be hosting a half-day forum scheduled for 12th March 2009 in Perth, especially designed to cater for Chief Information Officers.

Mike Bradford, Executive Director of Information Access at Landgate, will speak about the Shared Land Information Platform (SLIP) Enabler and how it can value-add and grow your business.

The Forum will be held in the ARRC auditorium at Bentley Technology Park.

18 February 2009 - SLIP Enabler is now ISO Certified

ISO AccreditationSLIP Enabler has achieved ISO 9001:2008 quality certification. The ISO 9001 standard, established by the International Organization for Standardization, is the world's most established quality framework and represents an international consensus on good quality management practices. Some of the benefits of certification include:

  • Improved consistency of service and product performance;
  • Improved productivity and efficiency through continuous improvement processes; and
  • Better products and services.

The scope of SLIP Enabler's accreditation is the provision of spatially related data from a diverse group of custodians through open geospatial standards within a framework that preserves the integrity and autonomy of those datasets.

Landgate's Quality Assurance section worked alongside personnel from SLIP Operations, who are responsible for the day-to-day administration and operation of SLIP Enabler, towards achieving the certification by acting as independent assessors in identifying and reviewing business issues, policies, procedures and work practices, and in the continual improvement in SLIP working processes.

The certificate was formally presented to BSM by Paul Whyte, Acting Chief Executive, on February 5.

27 January 2009 - SLIP Developers Innovation Grant

Imagine you have a need to build a new school and need to know what information there is to help in the planning process, or if you are in the middle of the bush and need some updated maps sent to you on your PDA. These are just some of the innovations currently being developed as part of an innovation grant scheme available to the authorised SLIP Developers. SLIP provides a wealth of data that can be utilised for various tasks and through these innovative ideas, Landgate has an opportunity to showcase the uses of SLIP services for specific applications.

At the end of 2008, an application process was open to the SLIP Developers for innovative uses of SLIP. Partnering with the SLIP developers Landgate will be identifying new opportunities for SLIP commercial applications or highlighting the community good that can be achieved through SLIP. The four applications chosen cover Local Government data needs, a Planning tool that combines asset and environmental information, a mapping ‘tile syncing’ application for mobile devices and a community location based services application for customised community mapping.

18 December 2008 - Public Data Download: Now available to registered SLIP users

While a key goal of SLIP is to provide real-time access to distributed spatial data, some scenarios require the ability to extract a snapshot of spatial data.  To this end, SLIP Enabler also provides the ability to download predefined sets of publically available data from our “Downloader” service, which provides registered users with a snapshot of specific spatial data taken at a certain point in time.

Data is “pre-packaged” according to predefined parameters and can be used in applications that don’t support access to Web Services. You can also download data that can be used when internet access isn’t available, providing you with more flexibility in data use.

Access to public data download is now available to all registered SLIP users.

18 December 2008 - New Cadastral Subscription Service available

Following feedback from customers trialling SLIP Subscription Services, a new Cadastral service has been made available. The new layers available are:

  • Cadastre (Polygons);
  • Cadastre (Lines);
  • Cadastre (Points);
  • Lodged (Polygons);
  • Lodged (Lines);
  • Lodged (Points);
  • Easements (Polygons);
  • Easements (Lines); and
  • Easements (Points).

A full list of attributes for the new Cadastral service are available from our Restricted Datasets page.

In addition, an updated Tenure service, providing additonal attributes, is currently under development and will be made available in the new year.

For more information on SLIP Subscription Services please see the Available Datasets page.

17 December 2008 - MapInfo Issue

MapInfo have confirmed a bug in MapInfo Professional which is affecting SLIP users.

Users of MapInfo have reported an error message whilst trying to obtaining some SLIP WFS layers. The SLIP GIS Team have investigated the reports and have identified two issues, which have been logged with MapInfo.

The main problem it is due to some restriction on the attribute name within a layer. The restriction is based on the “ref” keyword within the attribute name. For example: the Cadastre (Address) (LGATE-002) layer has the following element names: number_from_prefix and number_to_prefix (as shown below).

MapInfo Issue

The following layers are affected:

  • 2003-2005 ASS Site Evaluation (DEC-026)
  • Cadastre (Address) (LGATE-002)
  • Native Title (NNTT) (LGATE-004)
  • Native Title (Fed Court) (LGATE-005)
  • Native Title (Determination) (LGATE-066)
  • Swan Drainage Region (SWAN-002)
  • Swan Drainage Region (SWAN-002)
  • Swan Drainage (Point) (SWAN-003)
  • Swan Drainage (Polygon) (SWAN-004)
  • Swan Drainage (Polyline) (SWAN-005)
  • Hydrographic Catchments - Subcatchments (DOW-015)

The issue has been tested against MapInfo 8.5 and MapInfo 9.5 and although confirmed by MapInfo as being a bug in the product, we do not know if or when there will be a patch issued. Please speak to your local MapInfo support for further details, as this may give higher priority for the fix. We will endeavour to keep you updated if we receive anymore information from MapInfo. We apologise for any inconvenience for this particularly strange issue.

12 December 2008 - SLIP layers update

The following layers in SLIP have been removed either because they have been superseded by new SLIP data services or because they will no longer be updated by the custodian agency:

  • Augusta-Walpole Wetlands;
  • National Parks;
  • National Parks Detailed;
  • Tuart Trees; and
  • Nature Reserves.

The layers were transferred from the old WA Atlas and as such they are only a static file unlike data services, which are continuously updated.

25 November 2008 - SLIP sets the standard for spatial excellence

In a recent media statement, Minister Brendon Grylls said he was thrilled with the recent announcement by Premier Colin Barnett that the Landgate entry was judged overall winner of the 2008 Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Public Sector Management.

“Landgate had already won in its category ‘Improving Government’ and to receive the top honour reinforces that SLIP has set the standard for spatially enabling government,” Mr Grylls said.

The Minister said SLIP was a WA success story.

“SLIP is being recognised worldwide as a project that exhibits high levels of best practices in both governance and implementation,” he said.

“I would like to extend my congratulations to Landgate and everyone involved in this exciting and worthwhile project.

“In particular, my thanks go to Landgate’s former chief executive Mr Grahame Searle who led the development of the SLIP concept in collaboration with other government agencies.”

09 October 2008 - WFS Schema Geometry Type Issue Resolved

The existing problem with SLIP WFS services reporting a generic GML geometry type has now been resolved. This will resolve some compatibility issues reported by users such as:

  • Inability to export featuretypes to shapefiles using ESRI’s Data Interoperability Extension in ArcGIS Desktop
  • Mapinfo Professional and Intergraph Geomedia refusing to parse schema’s for the offending types
  • Clarifying the geometry type when adding featuretypes to ESRI products. Now it will report only the relevant geometry type (eg. Polygon for LGATE-002)

25 August 2008 - WA Atlas Enhancements Implemented

Improvements to the SLIP map viewing platform, WA Atlas, have now been implemented. The improvements focus on enhancing user’s functionality and control, giving the interface greater flexibility and user-friendliness. The updates also work towards creating a platform that is consistent in style and usability with other Landgate map viewing applications such as Property Finder and Interest Enquiry.

Enhancements include:

  • Standardised icons for greater map control;
  • Ability to bookmark maps and layers for future use (saved map sent via email);
  • To implement a drag and drop layers functionality to the WA Atlas which is an improvement over the current situation of having to move layers one position at a time. The drag and drop will be constructed on the current non-hierarchal view of the layers.
  • To implement a process to enable Imagery metadata to be published from the database that stores the Mosaic extents. This will ensure that the metadata records are up to attached to the data on exposure to our clients.
  • To improve the way Legends for data layers and to add support for selection of WMS styles per layer. This will allow a full class menu legend and improve map presentation options available to the user.

The updated WA Atlas How To guide illustrates the functionality within the enhanced WA Atlas application.

11 August 2008 - Upgrade of MapServer/GeoServer

12 May 2008 - Additional projections supported in WFS

As a result of a recent system modification a number of layers in SLIP are now available with additional coordinate projections.

Previously there are large number of predominantly Landgate layers that could only be presented in one projection via WFS, generally this was GDA94 as this was the projection of the original data source. Due to a recent change SLIP can now source these layers from a specialised SLIP data store which allows the layers to be displayed in all the projections that are currently supported by SLIP for the remainder of the layers.

The following layers can now be displayed in multiple projections:

Additional Projections now supported

  • 4283 (GDA94)
  • 4326 (WGS84)

20 February 2008 - Interragator+ Changes

  • Unnapproved/draft metadata records previously visible when searching through the Atlas component of Interragator+ will no longer be visible until they are actually approved.
  • Previously on Interragator+ when a user created a record and transfered the ownership to a new user, the record could not be edited by the new user. This has now been resolved.
  • The "What" and "Where" search fields in Interragator+ have been combined into one search field. You can search for either "What" or "Where" in the new search field, or you can go to the advanced search option to further define the 'Where' component via the map.
  • Interragator+ keywords can now be modified by the record creators (Custodians). These were previously 'locked' as un-editable.

8 January 2008 - “Add Layer” option on the WA Atlas

The “Add Layer” link will eventually disappear.  This is because these ‘older/static’ datasets will be turned into live web services and will then be found under the “Add WMS layer” and “Add WFS layer” links.  In the meantime if you are using “Add Layer” you may find the list getting smaller as data are moved across to services.

8 January 2007 - New Statutory Authority

The new agency responsible for Western Australia’s land and property information came into effect on 1 January 2007. The new Western Australian Land Information Authority, known as Landgate, is a statutory body which has heralded a new era in the rapidly expanding business of land information.

Land Information Minister Michelle Roberts welcomed the new agency, which replaced the Department of Land Information (DLI). “Extensive consultation with stakeholders, business, government, DLI and the public have all helped to pave the way for the new agency,” Mrs Roberts said.

“Landgate will deliver world-class information gathered by the best possible technology, allowing the agency to guarantee all work carried out. By creating Landgate, the Government has recognised the importance of land information in our increasingly knowledge-based economy.”

As a statutory authority, the revenue Landgate generates will be re-invested back into the agency, supporting the development of new technology, initiatives and opportunities. The agency will maintain the State’s official register of land ownership and surveying information, and also manage land and property valuations in WA.
